So, I thought for my first post that our adventures in new foods would be a good place to start, seeing as how today we just started our first vegetable: Carrots! Xander loved them! I'm going to be making all of our baby food, minus the cereal, so I am stoked that he enjoyed the carrots.
I had read several different tutorials on making baby food purees, and just did my own thing based off of all that I read. I steamed 1 pound of carrots in a steamer basket until they were nice and soft, but not too soft, then let them sit and drain for a few minutes. I could have put them straight into the blender at this point, but my blender is old and on the fritz, so I put them through my old-fashioned hand crank food processor. This got them nice and mushy! After the food processor, I put the puree, along with the leftover pulp and fibers, into the blender with about 6oz of breast milk to make sure the consistency would be right. Next, I poured the puree into a clean ice cube tray and covered it with foil and popped it into the freezer! Perfect little portions for my little Tater Tot!
I admit, I did taste the concoction before I offered it up to Xander, and it was quite good. He always gobbles his Rice cereal right up, but we had trouble with oatmeal giving him the nastiest gas, constipation, and he just didn't like the taste. I was worried that my carrots, that I worked soooo hard to make, would be turned down. It normally takes our little guys 15 minutes to eat his cereal, but those carrots were GONE in about 5! It looks like we have a keeper.... As long as the tummy problems don't come back.
Now time for a bath because Xander looks like an Oompa Loompa.
